Author’s note:
This SSDD is based on the infamous Hannah’s Sweets GCSE question from 2015. The original GCSE question asked students to show that a quadratic could be formed in part (a) of the question. However, when trialling the trimmed down version with a couple of classes, some students solved the last question without forming a quadratic. Therefore, I’ve included a second version which specifically prompts for students to construct an equation to calculate the answer. I felt it was important to offer both so that the spirit of the original question could be observed.
